indo-teen-killed-storm2SURREY – More than $20,000 has been raised so far through a GoFundMe page set up to raise money in honour of the South Asian teen from Surrey, who was killed during last Friday's storm.

Shakir Salaam died after a tree fell on him at Clayton Heights Secondary School.

"Today we lost a beautiful young man suddenly and tragically when a tree came down (in a storm) near his school and fell on him," reads the GoFundMe page. "Shakir Salaam's beautiful soul and kindness touched so many lives and he was taken too soon."

The donation page says it is raising money in Shakir's honour and that the family is "overwhelmed" with the public's generosity, reported the Now Newspaper.

"His family has requested we donate a portion to local Mosques in our area for perpetual prayers, donations to the local Muslim Food Bank in Shakir's name and we are going to look into donating a portion to setting up a water well in a impoverished country," reads the post.

"The rest of the donations will be set up for a 16 year rugby scholarship/grant given yearly to 2 students who represent the integrity and spirit Shakir was known for, as well we will have a plaque placed at Shakir's high school (Clayton Heights Secondary) in his memory and honour."

Brand-D-LogoSurrey's deputy Fire Chief Larry Thomas said the tragic accident happened just before 2:30 p.m. Friday at the school, which is located at 6965 188 St.

When first responders arrived, Thomas said, they found the boy in a wooded area near the school, with a tree on top of him.

The boy was rushed to hospital by ambulance.

“The Surrey RCMP is asking people to stay out of wooded areas during periods of high wind,” says Corporal Scotty Schumann.

A third storm is set to hit the Lower Mainland Saturday and forecasts predict it will be the worst of three to hit the region.
